April 24th Recap

The rain won, sort of. In spite of the intermittent downpours, eleven motorcyclists made it to our monthly meeting, albeit most in their cages. Tad Staubus was our hero though, as he rode his Aprila in from the other side of 400. Hats off to a real rider.

After a showing of Baloney Shop from The Lutheran Hour Ministries' Men's Network we talked about the Safety scenario that focused on Motion Camouflage and the steps to take to avoid being unseen by motorists potentially entering your right of way. For a detailed explanation see the SMIDSY link under Training.

In our discussion about Roadside Repairs and Maintenance we talked about the various electrical charging systems, how a malfunction could result in a dead battery, and what emergency steps can be taken to get you on the road again. This was followed up with short films on how to set up a new battery, and a description of the key components of charging systems typical of most bikes. Both these films are linked on our web site under Maintenance.

Bob Sullivan (the younger), supported by a series of pictures from Stromtroopers.com , showed the group how to fix a flat tire using the Stop N Go tire plugger;

on a wheel/tire he supplied. One of these kits, and the knowledge of how to use it, could save you hours in the boondocks should a nail find your "tar" (you're in the boondocks remember).

In order to not let the rain completely wash out our fun, we rescheduled the planned afternoon ride to next Saturday, May 1st, weather permitting, (Scott's all knowing, but fallible, Blackberry said rain is forecasted  for next Saturday, so keep apprised). We will probably leave church around 10 a.m. and ride up Dahlonega way for lunch then take the "loop" to Suches, Wolf Pen Gap, Blood Mountain and perhaps Brasstown Bald, if time permits. This is great riding country (yes, all paved, sort of).

We also planned an all day ride for May 15th, probably to Cherohala Skyway,  http://www.cherohala.org/  via the semi-secret Sullivan western approach to Tellico Plains. Don't miss this ride if at all possible; great country.

Steve brought up the possibility of a "light" dual sport ride on National Forest land near Suches. He and Larry will put more detail on the idea and get back to us all. Steve described the "road" as well maintained gravel/dirt suitable for most bikes. As of this writing Larry, Steve, Tad, Bob K and I are "signed on". This could be a great opportunity to get a taste of riding off the pavement (while there is someone there to help you pick up your bike Wink).

Our next regularly scheduled meeting (last Saturday of the month) falls on May 29th, which is the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. With this in mind we rescheduled that meeting to the next Saturday, June 5th.

At this point in our meeting we were warned "quarter size hail" is on its way. The room cleared quickly.
