Edna's-The Long Way

The Weather Man played with them all week long. First it was 70% chance of rain for Saturday (3/31), with occasional thunder storms. By mid week it was changed to partially sunny, 20% chance of rain. On Saturday morning they had reality, heavy threatening clouds with a light drizzle. By 9:45, their departure time, clouds were still evident but the hopefuls thought they saw a hint of soon-to-be blue sky here and there. Undaunted four riders took off for Ellijay and points north west, including Fort Mountain State Park.

After a stop at Dairy Queen in Ellijay (Blizzards anyone?) they started the twisty climb up SR52 to the park. About this time the sky brightened a bit and the hoped for blue sky could be seen here and there. It was clear enough for a stop at the Cohutta Overlook, where they pulled in behind a group of tasseled cruisers enjoying the day. With a good chance of a good view the four hiked up to the surprising large flag stoned pavilion on the summit (CCC?) and got a 180 degree view of the Cohutta Wilderness area. It was worth the huffing and puffing.

From there it was over to Fort Mountain where they were waved through the gate for a ride-around tour and photo op. Then it was down the mountain on the Chatsworth side, always a thrilling ride, to stop at Edna's for meat and two (or three) and Peanut Butter Pie (looked and tasted like Lemon Meringue).

After lunch it was down Old Federal Road to Dennis Mill then Old 61 to its end. The scenery was outstanding. Acres and acres of farm fields were carpeted with two foot high crops in yellow-orange flower. That, coupled with flowering dogwood, wisteria and other blooming plants, put a nice tone to the ride.

A quick hop on 411 brought them to Salacoa Road and a trip through some of the nicest dairy and cattle farms around. Then it was the twisties on Little Refuge Road and a cross through the National Cemetery to highway 20 and home.

Started out iffy but turned out great A good time for all.
